Maharashtra Chamber Intervenes in Kolhapuri Chappal Case; Footwear in Men’s Fashion Show Confirmed as Kolhapuri

Kolhapur – Italian luxury fashion brand Prada recently showcased sandals in their men’s fashion show that closely resembled the traditional Kolhapuri chappal, marketing them under their own label. In response, the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA) swiftly wrote to Patrizio Bertelli, the director of Prada, raising concerns over the unauthorized use of India’s cultural heritage. Prada has now officially acknowledged that the sandals presented were indeed Kolhapuri chappals. This development was confirmed by MACCIA President Lalit Gandhi on Friday.Lorenzo Bertelli, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Prada Group, responded in writing to MACCIA. He acknowledged the global recognition of Kolhapuri chappals, which are symbolic of Kolhapur’s identity and Maharashtra’s cultural pride. The brand admitted to showcasing Kolhapuri-style sandals in their show, which were initially portrayed as Italian, prompting concerns of cultural misappropriation. Lalit Gandhi criticized Prada for commercially exploiting India’s traditional crafts without giving due credit.

Chamber Acts on Artisans’ Appeal

While Prada was selling the Kolhapuri-style sandals at over ₹1,00,000, local artisans in Kolhapur craft the same footwear for as little as ₹400. Disheartened by this disparity and lack of recognition, several local artisans appealed to the Maharashtra Chamber to take action. In defense of the artisans’ legacy and the cultural significance of Kolhapuri chappals, Gandhi reached out to Prada to clarify the facts.

Prada Admits and Invites Dialogue

In its response, Prada acknowledged that the sandals displayed at the Prada Men’s 2025 Fashion Show represent a centuries-old Indian artisanal tradition. The company expressed an understanding of the cultural value of Indian craftsmanship and committed to "responsible design practices, enhanced cultural engagement, and opening meaningful dialogue with local artisan communities in India." Prada also assured MACCIA that it would honor and preserve the unique craftsmanship that represents excellence and heritage. The brand is open to discussions and meetings with MACCIA.

Kolhapuri Chappals to Feature in Expo

MACCIA regularly organizes expos across the state to promote local artisans. The original Kolhapuri chappals are given a prominent platform in these events to showcase their cultural and commercial value to national and international audiences, strengthening the identity and reach of Maharashtra’s traditional craft.
